I have said it so many times, but it is so true and I feel it in my core….In home sessions are so special because we are capturing memories where so many of your memories are made, your home.
Your home is the place you come together everyday. The place you feel safe. The place you can recharge. Maybe this is the place you brought your children home from the hospital as newborns. The place you are raising your family. The place where you first started your journey together. Think of all the laughter, tears, hugs; all the moments both big and small that have been shared in those four walls. This is a big reason I love in home sessions but there are many more.
In the mid-west the weather can be unpredictable (hello Wausau!). Especially was we get into mid-autumn and winter. In home sessions mean we don’t have to worry about rainy days, we don’t have to worry about below zero temperatures. There’s no rescheduling needed. There’s no cold, runny noses, there’s no worry of anyone being too cold. There’s no packing everyone up, I come to you! You will be warm and snuggled up in the comfort of your own home.
I’m sure you’ve heard of home team advantage, well you have an advantage when your photo sessions are at home. I know it can feel awkward or intimidating to be in front of the camera. Now I have my tricks to get my clients to relax and be natural pretty fast, but just knowing we are in your home, surrounded by things that are yours is comforting, even before our session begins. It feels more natural right away. Kids especially are even more relaxed at home. And usually they are so excited to show me around, sharing with excitement family pets, favorite toys, and amazing tricks they can do. That excitement and joy shines in photos! My couples love it too because they can ease into the comfort of each other just like they would if I wasn’t there. Snuggling at home feels natural.
One of the worries I have heard with in home sessions are usually things like “our home is small” or “we have kids, our home is always a disaster” or “our home isn’t a Pinterest home, it’s nothing special”. Let me tell you what I say to each of those.
“Our home is small” That’s okay. I don’t need a lot of room to work. In fact I can make magic, and even a full session if needed, with just one window. Much of my in home sessions focus around the bedroom and the living room. I have you snuggling on the bed and the couch. Depending on the light, the space, and the layout or if you want to capture some moments more documentary style, sometimes we will use other rooms too. But the core is near a place with a window to snuggle. Everyone has that!
“We have kids, our home is always a disaster” That’s okay. I have three boys and a dog, I know how that goes! Like I said before, I can make use of small spaces. Clearing and cleaning the space around the bed and the couch may be all it takes! But I am also big believer in embracing life as it is. It won’t take long to look back on those memories in a different light that you do now. Embracing the chaos of toys everywhere, endless laundry, a DIY home project - life won’t always look like this. Photos that embrace it will because stories that start with “remember when…”
“Our home isn’t a Pinterest home, it’s nothing special” That’s okay because it’s yours, it’s your space, your memories are made here. That is so much more important than if you feel like it’s decorated the way a Pinterest board would recommend. I love going into homes for these photo sessions and seeing personalities shine through. I love that each home I go into has a different feel and style. I love finding beautiful ways to bring that into your photos!
In home sessions are also a great place to embrace intimate moments. I offer intimate skin sessions that can be done both at outdoor sessions and in home sessions. Often having these sessions at home put clients at ease to capture these moments. Intimate skin moments are about embracing those stripped down moments, those moments of skin to skin. Sometimes that is with the one you love during a couples or engagement photos, sometimes that is nursing a newborn, and sometimes celebrating those close skin to skin moments with your babies during a family session.
I believe in home sessions bring a layer of memories into your photos that you will appreciate more and more with each passing year. I believe in home sessions are a beautiful and perfect choice for any kind of session: family photos, couples and engagement photos, maternity photos, newborn photos, and even boudoir photos!
Whether we have an outdoor lifestyle session at one of my locations, at an outdoor location that is special to you, or in your home for a session - my focus is always capturing beautiful and honest connections, and raw and authentic emotions. We will always capture the heart of you and your loved ones so every time you look at your photos you will feel those moments all over again.
Even though I am based Wausau I travel all over the state and even out of state for in home sessions! I travel to southern Wisconsin like Madison and Milwaukee, or even northern Wisconsin like Minocqua or Rhinelander!
