Matching Family Outfits versus Coordinated Looks: Pros and Cons
As a Wisconsin family photographer, I've had the privilege of capturing countless heartwarming moments for families . One aspect that is always asked when planning a family photoshoot is “what should to wear for family photos”.
There was a trend for a long time to matching outfits, think the days of everyone in a white t-shirt and blue jeans. That slowly evolved into in a very similar version of that of matching colors for the whole family.
Some people love that style and look in photos. I always say you should feel comfortable and confident in your photos, and if love if and feel good in it then you should absolutely rock it!
I tend to stay away from it when I am styling my clients and here’s why…
I always want my clients connection to be the main focus. I want people to see the joy, love, and fun of the family in the photos before anything else. But when families outfits match, our brains naturally seek out that pattern first and say “oh look, they all wore shades of blue.” before they see anything else. That’s just how our brains are wired.
Instead I always tell my clients we are going to go for coordinated over matching.
This way the colors effortlessly flow together, everything looks seamless, and leaves the focus on the family.
I walk my clients through this one-on-one in our planning. They have access to my client closet and my Wardrove & Styling Guide to make it extra easy. I even create custom collages to show them different color pallets coming together. But I do have a few of my tips for choosing colors, patterns, and styles when you want to coordinate rather than match:
When opting for coordinated looks, it's essential to consider colors, patterns, and styles that complement each family member's personality while maintaining an overall coherence. Here are some tips:
Select a Color Palette: Choose a color palette that includes complementary colors
Mix Patterns Wisely: When opting for a mix of patterns, such as stripes, florals, and solids, ensure the patterns share a common color or theme and don’t let them overtake the wardrobe
Consider the Setting: Think about where the photoshoot will take place. The backdrop can influence your color choices.
Accessories Matter: Accessories like scarves, hats, or statement jewelry can add a layer of visual interest to the photos.
