When to Schedule Your Newborn Photography Session: A Timeline for New Parents

Bringing a new baby into the world is an incredible milestone, and newborn photography is the perfect way to preserve those fleeting first days. But when should you schedule your newborn session to ensure you capture your little one at the perfect time? Here’s everything you need to know.

The Best Time for Newborn Photos

For those dreamy, snuggled-up poses, the ideal time to photograph newborns is between 5-14 days old. During this period, babies are sleepiest and still naturally curl into those adorable womb-like positions. They have all the details that are distinct of only newborns. After two weeks, babies begin stretching out, waking more frequently, and start to get to lose the newborn features for those of the rolly polly baby stage.

When to Book Your Newborn Session

Because newborn photography sessions require precise timing, ideally it’s best to book your session during your second trimester. This guarantees availability and allows us to plan around your due date.

What if My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

Babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, and that’s okay! When you book in advance, we pick a session day based in your due date. I keep flexibility in my schedule around my newborn clients and we can adjust as needed once your baby arrives. This flexibility in my schedule for newborns to ensure we capture your little one at the best time.

Why Choose Me for Your Newborn Session?

Unlike traditional posed newborn photography, my sessions are natural, warm, and baby-led. I focus on capturing both the details of your new little one and on your family’s authentic connection, using soft, natural light and a relaxed approach. I also guide you on wardrobe, location, and how to prepare for a stress-free session. My clients love my in-home session option for their newborn session. This allows them to be in the comfort of their own home, no packing up baby and all the things. It means we can take comfortable breaks for changes and feedings. And best of all, it means your photos include the memory of the home you brought your baby to, the place so many of your future memories will be made. It’s truly something special!
